Beat the Streets: Help Homeless and Underpriveliged Baltimoreans
1st world homeless living in 3rd world conditions equals an unnecessary 4th world class
I remember as a kid my mom saying, “Finish your food! There are starving kids in Africa who wish they had your plate.”
It was a good lesson, even though the point could have been made without having to use Africa as an example.
I didn’t really realize this until I was in my early 20’s visiting a gym in Los Angeles. I left the gym late at night and literally slammed into a wall of homeless known as skid row.
The experience was eye opening. I realized in our country of immense wealth and prosperity, there are thousands of people living worse than the average 3rd world citizen. I was ashamed I realized this so late in life.
Even though Baltimore has not produced a ‘skid row’ yet, the homeless population here continues to rise. There are more than 4,000 people, including women and children, who are currently living off the street, surviving off the kindness of strangers.
“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime” – Chinese proverb
It’s time to put a real dent in this number and permanently help homeless individuals and families who have lost their way.
Project HHUB will not only help provide for immediate needs like food and clothing but also long term needs such as housing, job training and placement, and health rehabilitation.
We will see real results and truly help homeless individuals with the help of empathetic neighbors who realize helping their neighbor also helps them.
